The Commodore Sloat School Library

At Sloat, we believe that what our students learn in the extra programs provided fosters their creativity and boosts their academic performance.

THE LIBRARY

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the Commodore Sloat Library. I am the school's librarian and media specialist, Jennifer Boyd.

The Commodore Sloat Library supports classroom curriculum and promotes students' love of reading. Each class visits our school library once a week to learn information literacy skills and to check out books. I share books, teach short lessons, and do all that is necessary to keep library materials organized and circulating.

"Destiny" is the district-wide online catalog used to handle circulation. You can use it to help your child search for books. There are links to useful resources on its home page, and the Catalog tab allows you to search the library's resources both at school and at home. Check out the school district's online book catalog!

Beyond our permanent collection of books in the library, for which we have a specified lending period, we also have a collection of books that are almost ready to be retired. Kids may take these books to read and return whenever they are done--no due dates.

We are happy to receive books from you as a donation, especially those of high quality that will last for years of enjoyment.

I really invite you to work with me to bring the full value of the library to your children. Your help as a volunteer allows us to serve all of the students better - to find the materials they are looking for and to return books to their proper places for others' use.

If you are interested to help out in the library, send me an e-mail at boydj1@sfusd.edu.

Thank you so much!

Jennifer Boyd

THE ADOPT-A-BOOK PROGRAM
Each year, the Sloat Parents' Club sponsors an Adopt-a-Book program, which gives families and friends the opportunity to donate a book to our library. This way, we replace old or damaged books as well as add to our library!

During the Adopt-a-Book program, you will receive a catalog of titles that Mrs. Boyd has chosen to the library, organized by grade level. You can buy as many titles as you want, and once all the orders are in, Mrs. Boyd will order them from a company that delivers the book library-ready. This means they have a sturdy cover and dewey decimal label. Students will have the chance to put a sticker in the books their family donates that indicates who donated it.
