At Sloat, we believe that what our students learn in the extra enrichment classes provided foster their creativity and boosts their academic performance. Expert instructors in various skilled areas work with students 30 minutes to one hour each week for a variable number of weeks per year, depending on the funding.
This year's arts enrichment includes:
- Choral music: Singing instruction by professional musician Mr. Ryan and San Francisco Arts Education Project (SFArtsED)
- Visual arts: Taught by working artist Aileen Barr, who has created several public artworks in San Francisco and been teaching at Commodore Sloat School for 9 years now.
- Theater & Movement: Basic theater for lower grades taught by San Francisco Arts Education Project (SFArtsED).
- Musical theater: More advanced theater for the upper grades taught by San Francisco Arts Education Project (SFArtsED). Class culminates in a school-wide performance.
- Poetry: Poetry instruction from Take My Word For It. Poems will be displayed throughout the school and final readings for each class will take place at the end of the semester.
- Instrumental music: Taught by professional music teacher Carla Lehmann, students can choose woodwind, brass, and stringed instruments.
- Adventures in Music: Funded by the San Francisco Symphony, AIM is music appreciation for all grades. The Symphony puts on four concerts for each grade per year and provides instructional materials to prepare for the concerts. The program culminates in a symphony performance at Davies Symphony Hall.
