Welcome to Commodore Sloat!
August 5, 2014
And so it begins! Allow me to be among the first to welcome you to the start of the 2014-2015 school year. The campus is clean, classrooms are gearing up, and the gardens are ready for the planting of new seeds. This year promises to be a special one: We will embark on our first year as an Education Outside school. We will take a deeper dive into new teaching and learning practices emerging from Common Core Standards. We will have Arts, Chorus, two PE teachers, a new full-time social worker, a new member for our Special Education team, a new second grade teacher, a new fourth grade teacher, a new website (coming soon), and innovative initiatives to promote a positive and affirming school climate – all of which will combine to sustain Commodore Sloat as a real gem among SFUSD elementary schools. We are eager to get started!
Some important dates:
Friday, August 15: Kindergarten Orientation Day from 10:00-11:00 am
Parents and their kindergarten students are invited to come to the school, hear from your child’s new teacher, and get acquainted with the school. Our PCO helps to sponsor this day, and our teachers will lay out some helpful information to get things off to a good start. (Details coming soon) I’ll look forward to seeing you there! Classroom assignments will be posted at 3pm in the windows adjacent to the school’s front doors.
Saturday, August 16: Green-Up Clean Up (10AM to 2PM) and Kindergarten Play Date (9AM to 10)
Our PCO, together with faculty and staff, reach out to the greater community at least three times each year for Green Up Clean Up days. The first is on August 16. Kindergartners and their parents are also welcome for a meet and greet from 9AM to 10AM – and beyond if you can. These combined events are great ways to get you and your child off to a good start. Community is among our top priorities at Sloat. Come on down and find out why!
Monday, August 18: First Day of School
We are a ‘free dress’ school – appropriate attire, yes. Uniforms, no. School hours are from 8:40 am-2:40 pm. Breakfast is served at 8:00AM. Yard supervision starts at 8:25AM, so for the safety of your child, please arrive at that time and not before. We will be there to greet you and the day will begin with our first outdoor assembly on the upper playground (corner of Darien and San Fernando Way) around the labyrinth. Free lunch forms, emergency cards, and other vital information will come home with your kids on that first day, so remember to check backpacks. If you have any questions, please ask. Emergency Cards are the most important forms to complete as soon as possible. These are the school’s primary means of contacting you in the event of any emergency. Please don’t delay the completion of this important form! And please remember that if your child participates in the on-site Anchor afterschool program, pick up time is 6:30pm.

If you have any questions before the start of school, please call or drop by. We will be happy to assist you! Meanwhile, enjoy the final days of summer and see you in a few days.
